Who does your child belong to?

I have two teenagers and when they were both young we decided to dedicated them to God in front of the church as a commitment that we would raise them according to God’s word.  In addition to having others join with us in praying for our children and us as parents. I was recently reminded that my kids do not belong to me and when we put our only daughter on a plane to head to Africa for two weeks. I had this same realization on their first day of school, the first time they drove alone and almost any other time they are out of our care. I can either worry and fret about every moment and decision or I can trust that they are in God’s constant care and He has a way better plan for my kids than I can even imagine! - Dena Myers

Here are some great thoughts from our Nursery Director, Elaine about Baby Dedication:

Question: What is Baby Dedication?

Answer: A Baby Dedication is a ceremony in which believing parents, and sometimes entire families, make a commitment before the Lord to submit a child to God's will and to raise that child according to God's Word and God's ways.

1 Samuel 1 tells of Hannah presenting her son Samuel to the Lord. In Luke 2:22 we read that Mary and Joseph brought their baby Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem in order to present him before the Lord.

Deuteronomy 6:4-7 “Listen, Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord is One!  You must love the Lord your God with your whole mind, your whole being, and all your strength.  These words I am commanding you today must be kept in mind,  and you must teach them to your children and speak of them as you sit in your house, as you walk along the road, as you lie down, and as you get up.”

Deuteronomy makes clear that the duty of teaching children belongs to parents; Sunday schools can provide weekly instruction, but parents must seize the teachable moments that arise throughout life, such as:

  • Bring God into your everyday issues and discussions.
  • Daily prayer at meal times and before bed.
  • Read to them or have them read Bible stories for devotions.
  • Be the role model of living a Christ-centered life.
  • Regularly ask thought provoking questions about God and faith.

Proverbs 22:6 “Train a child in the way that he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.”

Here at First Baptist a dedication service provides parents an opportunity to express publicly their desire to lead and spiritually nurture their child in cooperation with the Holy Spirit, in the hopes that their child will develop a desire to love God and love others.

Dedicating a baby is a commitment, as Christian parents, to teach the truths of God's Word in their home and participate in regular worship with their children. It is also a commitment to be a Christ-like example and to lead the children God has given them to a personal faith in Christ as soon as they are ready.

Our next Baby Dedication class will take place at 9:00 on Sunday, August 17th. Those that attend the class will have the opportunity to participate in the Baby Dedication service on Sunday, August 24th. If you are interested in Baby Dedication, please contact elaine@fbcboise.org.
